Since the dawn of time, human beings use plants for their health benefits, for their culinary interest or for less shameful pleasures. Yes, who has never had the opportunity to enjoy a small glass of herbal liqueur!!! Plants have many virtues and each in its field contributes to strengthening the action of a pharmaceutical or cosmetic product. The ENT sphere (discover all ENT disorders) is a pathway for many microbes or allergens where many infections result. The integration of plants in ENT products is a very effective response to the treatment of infectious diseases. ENT disorders are one of the leading causes of consultation.
In this article, we will see that plants are not only beautiful to see but have a major role in the treatment of diseases of the ENT sphere.
Plants and ENT treatment, a fusional couple there is no doubt.
The ENT sphere
ENT for Otorhinolaryngology or more commonly “ears, nose, throat” 3 letters that govern our way of life. Nobody imagines one day losing one of our 5 senses and mainly the sight, the smell, the taste or the hearing. If these are inseparable from our good living conditions, it sometimes happens that some dysfunctions come to stop this beautiful machine that is our ENT sphere. Indeed, it represents the preferred attack zone of viruses, bacteria and allergens that surround us. Who has never used eye drops for an eye infection, a nasal spray for colds, ear drops in case of otitis, a throat spray to calm a cough … A perpetual struggle is committed against these evil beings intentional but thanks to the plants, the victory is at the rendez-vous.
The interest of herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine, or the art of healing by plants, is particularly adopted with the approach of the winter when the fall of the temperatures favors the appearance of numerous respiratory problems. In the spring, it is the victims of hay fever that the plants help. Indeed, most seasonal ENT infections are mostly viral and do not require antibiotic treatment. If “antibiotics are not automatic” the plants themselves can relieve some troublesome symptoms and help strengthen our immune system. The NATURAL trend has encouraged health professionals to include in their formulations one or more plant extracts to enhance the action of the product. Of course, we do not mention the marketing aspect!! It is still more aesthetic to see a small colored flower on the packaging of a product.
Which plant (s) for which ENT pathology?
Thyme, mallow, white broth, Scots pine … there is a plethora of plants that can be used to treat infections of the ENT sphere. Given the multitude of possibilities offered by nature, I have selected a few widely documented examples that will convince you, I am sure, the effectiveness of plants in the treatment of infections of the ENT sphere.
The decongestion of the nasal pathway
We find in particular eucalyptus extract whose purifying action provides an intense feeling of freshness for a sustainable well-being. Extracts of chamomile and aloe vera that improve the hydration of the nasal cavity and soothe the sensations of irritation. Thyme with anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties is also an excellent decongestant.
The sinusitis
Cyclamen extract, recognized medicinal plant reduces the swelling of the nose and sinuses mucosa. Less known, plantain or marjoram associated with eucalyptus slow allergic phenomena and calm inflammation of the nasal cavity.
Sore throats
We mainly find white broth. Its soothing properties on the throat irritation are due to the presence of mucilages in this plant’s flowers. Marshmallow is also rich in mucilage and is effective in relieving sore throats. We can also mention sage and thyme that have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic actions or the calendula and black elderberry used in gargling have demonstrated calming effects.
Oral infections
Clove is not anymore to be introduced and is widely used in case of dental pain. For gum problems, echinacea or hawthorn berries with antimicrobial properties prevent infections by killing bacteria in the mouth. The noble laurel is ideal for sensitive oral mucosa because it is an excellent antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal while being analgesic.
Otitis
The anti-infective effects of plants offer an interesting alternative to conventional drugs. These remedies are to be used at the first warning signs, to try to avoid infection or to space relapses. To my knowledge, there is no plant-based product for the treatment of otitis. Nevertheless, some plants are recognized in natural medicine as is the case of the onion which thanks to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties often unknown, helps fight the bacteria that generate otitis. The incorporation of garlic extracts, one of the best natural antibiotics or St. John’s Wort to olive oil and then used in ear drops can also relieve pain in case of otitis.
Add plants to your ENT treatments
While conventional pharmacopoeia offers few possibilities for the prevention of recurrent ENT pathologies, phytotherapy is of great interest and is the source of several qualified background treatments. Although the effectiveness of each plant and its use have not been studied in depth, they are able today to compete with drugs. Of course, they must be rigorously selected, their dosage well studied to avoid undesirable side effects. However, be careful, what is sold is not necessarily allowed and what is allowed is not necessarily effective. So focus on certified and controlled products that guarantee a high level of security.
